Death Literacy

We fear what we don’t know. Through education, contemplation, and personal reflection, we are invited to become more death literate so that we can move beyond fear and nurture an honest and healthy relationship with our mortality.

As a death literacy advocate, Stephanie has been facilitating death & dying conversations and educational workshops at libraries, event spaces, and for community groups in the Bay Area since 2021.

Conversations for Mortals Series

Based on the death café model, Conversations for Mortals is a group-led discussion that explores and normalizes conversations around death and dying. This is not an educational presentation and there is no agenda. It is simply a gathering for all mortals to commune around the topic of death, with a side of tea and cookies. By opening up the conversation around mortality, we hope to cultivate acceptance, compassion, and connection with one another as we ponder our inevitable fate.

Exploring Our Mortality Workshop

Dying is a part of life, yet society goes to great lengths to help us deny our inevitable fate. Rather than continuing to run away from this topic, we can turn toward this reflection and gain deeper insight and wisdom for how to start living with more gratitude and presence. Through group discussion, writing prompts, and a guided death meditation we will learn how awareness of our own mortality can actually change the way we live our life.

Death Education 101 & 102

This 2-part presentation series covers basic death education topics like:

  • Brief history of death care

  • Hospice vs. palliative care

  • Death doula role

  • Advanced care planning

  • Burial options

MAID & VSED Informational

This presentation seeks to raise awareness about Medical Aid in Dying (MAID) and Voluntarily Stopping Eating and Drinking (VSED), which are legal options for those with decision-making capacity to end their lives. This information is for educational and contemplative purposes only, and in no way intends to encourage certain decisions at end of life. The goal is to provide folks with resources so they feel empowered to navigate end of life decision making for themselves and their loved ones.

Other Education Topics

  • Death Anxiety

  • End of Life Symptoms and Bedside Care
